Our first league match of the season is against the team who narrowly beat us in the recent 4 counties competition at Broadway Worcestershire. With exams and the Fairhaven Trophy our boys’ team for this fixture was all ways going to be a young team.
The first pairing in the morning foursomes, Luke Turbutt & James Scagell were involved in a tight game. Recovering from losing the first 2 holes getting the match back to level but finally going down 2&1.
The news from the last match was also not in our favour our 2 under 16 boys Omid Mobed & Rocco Lucca despite playing decent golf lost 4&3.
Josh Davenport & Dan Pearce, the Maxstoke boys, were always in control of their game as were the pairing of James Bowen & Luke Green both pairings winning 2&1
The news from the team captain Tom Charley playing with Luke Challis was good playing the par 5 18th 1 up with a chance to take a slim lead at lunch. Our boys were looking good and were just short of the green in 2 with the Worcester boys 90 yards back. Then the shot of the morning round Ollie canned his pitch for an Eagle three to get an unlikely half so all square at lunch 2.5 point each. All to play for in the afternoon singles.
With all the boys out on the course my first vantage point for the singles was at the back of the 8th green you could catch the boys teeing off on the 5th & 9th and walk across to the 11th tee so from this point you could keep on top of most of the matches.
First through eight holes was James Scagell not having the best of days trailing 5 down at the same time driving off the 5th James Bowen gave me better news, 2 up.
Luke Turbutt through 10 holes was 1 down. Omid had been hit with a barrage of birdies, 4 in fact within the first 5 holes, and although level par himself he was 4 down. Welcome to the big boys game Omid.
Our other debutant young Rocco Lucca was fitting it nicely 2 up through 4 . All the other matches through eight Warwickshire boys were all leading by narrow margins.
Omid had made a great fight back only 1 down through 10 unfortunately he lost the next 2 holes and lost his match 4&2.
From this point on all the news from the course was good.
The much improved James Bowen destroyed his opposition 6&5 as did the star of the future (remember this boy’s name) Rocco Lucca great effort from both players. Tom, Luke & Josh all gained a point meaning we required a half point to secure victory. Luke Turbutt was playing the last 1 down Dan Pearce was 2 down with 3 to play the last score I had from Luke Green he was 2 up with 5 to play. Where would the winning point come from?
I made the decision to follow Luke Turbutt up 18 and I am glad I did. 2 great shots onto the green followed by a 15 foot putt for an eagle finish to half is match and gain us that winning half. Not that I needed to worry Dan Pearce won all of the last 3 holes to win his match 1 up followed by Luke Green Punching above his weight winning 2 up
Great performance from all the boys a true team effort.
What this result showed me today is the coaching program we have put into place over the winter months will in the future keep Warwickshire competitive at all levels.
