Another glorious day for playing golf. Today saw the first semi final of Inter Club League featuring Maxstoke Park and Ladbrook Park who were drawn to play at Stratford on Avon Golf Club. Both teams arrived early and were in good spirits. Order of play indicated that this was going to be a close match with little difference in handicaps.
The Stratford course was looking in tremendous condition and all players stated how well the course was playing with the greens in excellent condition. After nine holes all matches were very close with Maxstoke just in the lead. Ladbrook leading in two matches, whilst Maxstoke lead in three with the other two being all square.
The first five matches were won by Maxstoke with the third match playing to conclusion down the 19th. As this meant that Maxstoke could not be beaten the next match was halved with the final two matches being shared one each. Maxstoke won the day 5 1/2 to 1 1/2.
County Captain, Margaret SHEEPY thanked Stratford for hosting the event and congratulated both teams on a very good match.
Players in Match 1:
Maxstoke: - Glenda LORAM, Sheila CARDWELL, Carol BANCROFT, Angela ALLEN, Maria SWINDELL, Barbara WOOLLEY and Georgie KENNETT
Ladbrook: Sue SHORTT, Anne TAYLOR, Lyn ROOKE, Janet LEES, Diana BEST, Tina BATES and Janet SMITH.
In the second semi-final, this one commencing at 2.30 at Ladbrook Park, the teams featured were Robin Hood Golf Club (who had last appeared in a League Semi-final some 23 years ago!!) against Kenilworth Golf Club.
Again the venue was in fantastic condition with all very complimentary of the course and with the weather perfect, battle commenced. Once again there was little between the handicaps in each game.
At Ladbrook, Kenilworth celebrated winning the first 3 games and then when they won the 5th game, they knew they had sufficient wins to go through to the final, eventually winning by 5 games to 2. Apart from the first game, all others were very close finishes, which could have gone either way. The results were announced by League and Alliance Organiser Trisha WELLER whilst Kenilworth waited in anticapation to learn who their opponents would be in the Final.
Thus the Final will be played between Maxstoke Park and Kenilworth on MONDAY 26th September at The Welcombe Golf Course, commencing 1 p.m.
County President, Jane DENNICK who had been at Ladbrook all afternoon, thanked Ladbrook Park for their hospitality and hoped that both teams had enjoyed their day's play.
