Warwickshire Under 14's v Shropshire & Herefordshire
Venue: Arscott Golf Club, Shrewsbury
This was our first match of the 2017 season and the Warwickshire team arrived confident, although they had not seen the course before and for quite a few boys it was their first ever County match.
The teams were paired up combining a low and high handicap played in 6 matches. This is the preferred format of the host county Shropshire and Herefordshire.
The team Captain, Alex Ford led his team with Chanon James. It was a typical match, with one County getting ahead and the other pulling the match back to all square. It was a real team effort with contributions from both boys.
It looked like 'Team Warwickshire' were gonig to struggle to get a win, as Alex and Channon were 1 down with three holes to play. However, they proceeded to win the next two holes, so only needed a half on the last to secure the point, which Alex Ford achieved with a chip and a 3 foot put on the 18th green.
Match 2 featured Matthew White and Joseph McInnes. Matthew has joined us from The Belfry. The boys were up against it with one of the Shropshire and Herefordshire boys off 5 playing very well. The boys went down early and didn't get the breaks they needed to get back into it. They lost 6&5.
The third match featured Liam Scagell and Charlie Lamb. The match started by losing the first hole. However, the boys battled back extremely well to win 3&2.
The fourth match featured one of our debutants, Sachin Kolhi and George Halstead from Kenilworth GC. This match was very close throughout, with Warwickshire managing to win 1up.
Lucas Laurie and Oliver Clark teamed up as another rooky pair in the 5th match, and did very well to hold on to a 1 down deficit for most of the middle part of the game. Lucas and Oliver then won two holes to go 1up with only three holes to play. Unfortunately, the opposition also raised their game and went 1up on the 17th and then halved the last to record a winning point for Shropshire and Herefordshire.
Finlay Haynes and Harry Bromwich played the final match, which was very tight, however in the closing holes Shropshire and Herefordshire finished very strongly and recorded a 2&1 win.
The overall result ended at 3 wins and 3 losses. A fair result in the end and some great things to build on for the next match against Staffordshire at Rugby Golf Club on 21st May.
I want to thank Richard Clark and Kent James for their support. We are very proud of the team performance and the response of the boys and parents was fantastic - well done all!
Regards,
John Simpson
