Team: Tom Cleaton (Rugby), Josh Davenport (Maxstoke Park), James Bowen (Olton), Cameron Bridger (Marston Lakes), Daniel Pearce (Maxstoke Park) and Tom Charley (The Warwickshire).
Beautiful day, interesting course, designed as an inland links and high hopes. One team from ten Midland Counties to qualify for the National finals. There are six players per team and the aggregate of 5 best scratch scores in each of two rounds count. A tough task!
After 9 holes we looked in a sound position, with our best 5 being four over par between them, not the best but a very sound platform. After our first two had finished, there was still no cause for alarm with Tom Cleaton level par and Josh Davenport 1 under. Then things started to go awry! Two disaster holes from Cameron cost 9 shots in an otherwise good score was closely followed by James Bowen, playing the last at one over par, hitting a second shot into the water, followed by a misunderstanding of the rules and failure to call the referee resulting in a 9, which should have been 5. Now we need two good scores, but with Dan suffering a series of mishaps in an n 81, things were out of control before a respectable, if not exciting 3 over 76 from Tom Charley rounded things off at 377 and 7th place, 19 shots behind an in-form Staffordshire and 15 behind Nottinghamshire, a bit much to catch!
Round 2 was altogether different, but too late as Staffordshire again showed their class with a 2nd round of 366 as, one from the best, to secure the qualifying position. One from the best, however, is significant as the best was achieved in a tie between 2nd placed Nottinghamshire and – wait for it – a revitalised Warwickshire! Scores of 71 from the two Maxstoke boys, 72 from Tom Charley, 75 from Tom Cleaton and 76 from Cam Bridger amounted to 365! A great comeback and well done boys.
Special mention and congratulations to Josh Davenport for his 142 score and fourth place individual score
