SENIORS WIN FIRST ONE IN THREE
After two defeats it was great to bounce back to winning ways on a generally cloudy, but dry day at Nuneaton Golf Club, where we welcomed our Eastern Counties opponents Cambridgeshire. After our win in last week's Senior Midland Qualifying Championship at Hawkstone Park with the magnificent trophy on show to greet all the players when they entered the Clubhouse, it was important to show that last week's result was something that could be built on. With players rested from both sides after their Hawkstone exploits, the morning greensomes were finely poised at 3.5 points to 2.5 points, in favour of the home side at lunch.
However with 4 solid wins from 5 matches in the afternoon fourballs any chances of an away win for Cambridgeshire were extinguished. With every home pairing contributing something to the scoreboard during the day, the Nuneaton course was presented in first class condition with players from both sides commenting on the quality of the greens which provided an excellent surface to putt on.
The matches were all played in an excellent spirit and my thanks to Cambridgeshire for their warm praise and well wishes after our performance last week and in now looking ahead to our excursion to Northumberland for the County Finals in October.
My thanks to Nuneaton Golf Club for their hospitality during the day and to the green staff for the quality of the course, it really was a pleasure to return to my golfing roots, some 44 years after first playing there as a young teenager, the course for one, has held it's performance over the passing years.
