OLTON TEAM | LADBROOK TEAM |
After a summer of Club knockout matches, the Final of the Silver Division Foursomes Knockout took place on Saturday 23rd September at Shirley Golf Club. Making it to the final were Ladbrook Park GC Team represented by Jean BADMAN, Liz WOOLF, Judy TURNER and Sue SIMS and an Olton GC Team represented by Christina KENNEDY, Wendy McINTYRE, Karen HEARN and Hilary DIXON.
The format of this competition is that Clubs from within Warwickshire who applied to join in earlier in the year, played individual matches against other Clubs resulting in the two finalists. Each Club could have a squad from which to draw players and in each round and there were two pairs picked for individual matches, playing in Foursomes format. Unlike other matchplay situations, these games go to the bitter end and the total holes won/lost of each pairing are matched against the opponents won/lost holes, resulting in a final winning score. If however the scores are the same, then the second pairing carries on playing until a hole is won.
After the County Captain had checked the handicaps resulting in each pair of Ladbrook players receiving 2 shots from their opponents, the first match commenced play at 12 noon with Jean and Liz pitched against Chris and Wendy. Play here was nip and tuck throughout and although the Olton pair were never up, they kept pulling back, never quite managing to forge ahead. By the turn, Ladbrook were 3 up and going along quite steadily, going 4 up after the 11th, reducing to 3 after 12, then increasing to 4 on 13, immediately losing a hole on 14 - back to 3 up. Both pairs made an absolute fiasco on the Par 5, 15th hole resulting in a half even though Ladbrook had a shot!! Olton won the 16th and with 2 halves on 17th and 18th, Ladbrook won the match 2 up.
Game 2 started apace with Olton Team of Karen and Hilary quickly forging ahead of Ladbrook Team of Judy and Sue. This Olton Team were on fire and by the turn were 4 up even though they had just lost the 9th. After 12 holes Olton were 6 up and this was proving very difficult for Ladbrook to manage a charge. With wins for Ladbrook on 15th and 17th, Olton still managed to retain their 6 hole lead, a terrific showing from Karen and Hilary. With their 6 hole lead against the first pairs 2 hole loss, Olton thus won the whole match by 4 holes. Well done them.
The games were played in great spirit on a course which was quite wet underfoot after the recent rain, but with the greens running well and true, everyone enjoyed this final, which was a joy to watch. As the day progressed, the sun came out and it turned out to be a wonderful autumnal day.
After tea, Margaret SHEEPY thanked all the players for their friendly but competitive attitudes and hoped that they had all enjoyed this new tournament and final, only in it's second year and congratulated Olton for their win. She also thanked Shirley GC for their hospitality and then County President, Caroline Lassen presented the prizes and Trophy.
Ladies Sections in Warwickshire Clubs, why not consider entering this competition in 2018? It's a great new format and very enjoyable to play in.
