Home advantage certainly played it's part in the County Team Championships on Monday 3rd September. The venue for this day was Nuneaton Golf Club and all players and caddies were firstly welcomed by the fantastic display of their flower pots as they arrived at the club - what a display of colour. Today, there were 21 Teams of 5 from within Warwickshire, 105 players in total who teed off on both 1st and 10th tees with 2 or 3 players per team playing in the morning with the remainder in the afternoon. This year the rules stated that out of the 5 players' scores, only the best 4 would count for the Team prizes and as well as Gross (The Chipman Cup) and Nett (The Daisy Hartill Cup) Prizes, there was an individual Nett score (The Veronica Anstey Trophy) to be played for.
Much cooler than of late at the start of play, but soon the sweaters were removed and the weather for the rest of the day was good for golf. After our very hot summer with little rain, all courses have struggled with their fairways having full growth and a full green look and Nuneaton was no different, however the greens were excellent, albeit some of the competitors found them hard to read. The Greens staff had done a great job in preparing the whole course.
A score of 71 Nett recorded early in the day by Marsha BUTTON from Nuneaton set the standard of play and this was not bettered during the day. With 3 Nuneaton scores recorded after the morning's play, it was looking good for them in both Gross and Team scores with Moor Hall also in the mix. By the end of play though with a lounge full of players in their team colours, the full results were known and there was a buzz of expectation in the room.
Lady Captain of Nuneaton, Claire MIDDLETON gave a late welcome to everyone and after thanking all of her Club member helpers, she stated that Nuneaton GC was very proud to have hosted this event and hoped that everyone had enjoyed their day.
Warwickshire President, Caroline LASSEN gave her response, giving a more detailed thanks to the Lady Captain and her immediate team of helpers, particularly the lady who had done the beautiful flower arrangements in the club, but also the starters, ball spotters, caterers and bar staff. She also thanked Warwickshire Competition Organiser, Martine GILKS for her hard work in organising the day with a special mention to her daughter Heather, who had helped to make £127 in the Ball Sweep. Caroline gave special congratulations to Alison GLEDHILL from Edgbaston who scored a Hole in One on the 4th hole. Apparently, Alison when handing her card into the organiser had said "has anyone else had one today?!!"
The Veronica Anstey Trophy was the first to be awarded and after posting her score early in the day, Marsha BUTTON (Nuneaton) was the recipient, on countback from Paula WINWOOD (Stratford-on-Avon GC) with a 71 Nett.
Next to be awarded was the Nett Runners Up prize (this year awarded as the Gross and Nett Prizes were presented to the same club) with the recipients being Edgbaston GC.
The Chipman Cup and The Daisy Hartill Cups were awarded to Nuneaton Golf Club who scooped both prizes. Their team of Marsha BUTTON, Rachel RUSTED, Kelly TOMLINSON, Linda POPE and Rose SIDWELL achieved scores of 340 Gross and 305 Nett.
As Nuneaton had won both Trophies, the voucher prize for the Nett score was awarded to the Team from Edgbaston Golf Club - Sharon BUTLER, Dawn HOOPER, Tricia SADIQ, Alison GLEDHILL and Peta FRANK who were the Runners Up, recording 307 Nett.
Marsha BUTTON spoke on behalf of the Team and after thanking her fellow players for their efforts today and Warwickshire Organisers she commented " they had done it for the Lady Captain! "
Well done to all the players and particularly to the winners.
