On a very hot September Monday morning at the Menzies Welcombe Hotel & Golf Course in Stratford, all was set for the 2014 League Final to take place. The two contesting clubs were Rugby GC and Shirley GC and the teams of seven players from each club were keen to get started at 9.30 a.m.
The toss was held and the Shirley players were called to the Tee to drive off first in each match and whilst starting with their purple sweaters on, these were soon discarded as the sun got hotter and hotter. The Rugby players also sported their colours, pink this time so it was easy for the spectators to know who was playing from afar!
The pairings were as follows:
1 Katrina GANI (Shirley) v Abi MORTIMER-LANE (Rugby)
2 Yen PHAM (Shirley) v Judith PEGLAR (Rugby)
3 Carol O'HARE (Shirley) v Sue JONES (Rugby)
4 Lesley FISHER (Shirley) v Sandra BRAZIER (Rugby)
5 Val BARKER (Shirley) v Debbie HARRAD (Rugby)
6 Minu NATHWANI (Shirley) v Helen (Rugby)
7 Suzanne HUDSON (Shirley) v Linda LONG (Rugby)
Match 1 went all the way to the 18th, with Katrina being the victor, whilst Yen beat Judith on the 16th, 3 and 2. Carol had a great win over the very experienced Sue Jones, winning 4 and 2, and then Lesley finished her match against Sandra on the 15th, 4 and 3. Thus Shirley had been successful in the top four matches and when match 5 had completed the 15th hole, all players were called in for an early lunch, as the result could not have been changed.
Shirley Ladies are the League Champions for 2014 - well done to them and also to the Rugby Ladies who played the match in such a competitive but very sporty and friendly manner.
